The development of this sys­tem will take 2 years and provides for the installation of Russian missiles on practi­cally every modern fighter.

General Director of Ilyu­shin Aircraft Corporation releases news that 5 Il-38 (May) anti-submarine air­craft of the Indian Air Force will be upgraded at their Russian plants.9

 

Il-38 modernization will in­clude new avionics, naviga­tion and communication sys­tems as well as changing the Berkut anti-submarine system for the Novella system (ex­port version – Sea Snake).

Moldavian parliament ap­proves the decision to sell the country’s 6 MiG (Ful­crum) fighters and 13 MLRS Uragan launchers.22

 

20% of the proceeds will be given to the Defense Minis­try, 80% will go to the state budget.

Malaysia is considering the possibility of purchasing a batch of multi-role Su-30 fighters produced at IAIA.

Completion of running test of the second Zubr (Po­mornik class) amphibious ship that Ukraine should have delivered to Greece 4 months before.28

 

As per 2000 contract for the delivery of 2 project 1232.2 Zubr amphibious ships for a total of $100 mln.

Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant (UUAZ) signs a contract for the manufacture of 5 multirole Mi-171Sh (Mi-8AMTSh, Hip H)) combat helicopters for an unspeci­fied Middle Eastern coun­try.29

During his trip to Russia King of Jordan Abdullah II visits Tula-based KBP – Instrument Design Bu­reau.30

 

KBP is the designer and pro­ducer of short-range air de­fense systems, ATGM and small arms.

Rosoboronexport signs gen­eral agreements with Ural Optical Mechanical Plant (UOMZ) and Novator De­sign Bureau for the “pro­motion of military-use products on foreign mar­kets”.31

 

Novator Design Bureau is a designer of anti-ship missiles; UOMZ develops and pro­duces military and civil-use optical equipment.

Defense Ministers of the Ukraine and Finland sign a memorandum on military cooperation.32

 

The memorandum includes peacekeeping operations and military-technical coopera­tion. Finland also considers the possibility of upgrading its T-72 tanks in Ukraine.

The Ukraine’s president Leonid Kuchma said that the Ukraine and Russia have nearly reached an agreement on sale of the project 1164 Ukraina (Slava class) guided missile cruiser to Russia after its construction is completed.49

 

The Ukraina cruiser is being built in the Nikolaev ship­yards and is more than 90% complete.

Kumertau Aircraft Produc­tion Enterprise (KumAPE) is reported to negotiate with China for the delivery of Ka-28 ASW and Ka-27PS (Helix) search and rescue helicopters.50

The Chelaybinsk-based JSC Electromashina began up­grading 30 Scorpion APCs for the UAE Army.51

About $750 thousand

The Scorpion APCs will be equipped with Kalgan-01 automatic weapons control systems designed and built by JSC Electromashina. There is also an option for the modernization of 50 more APC.52

Acting under the instruc­tions of the Committee on Mil­itary-Technical Coop­eration, the Kolomna-based Machine-building Design Bureau (KBM) halted its nego­tiations with General Dy­namics on the Arena ac­tive armor protection sys­tem.54

 

The decision was based on the disagreement with the Americans on sales conditions for the Arena system.

The Osa-2 radar with phased array is to be installed in multi-role MiG-29UBT fighters.

Besides “Polyot,” the short list included Samara-based JSC “Aviacor” that produces Tu-154 planes. The order volumes for An-70 remain unclear.

It is reported that China has decided to render gra­tuitous technical aid to Ta­jik Defense Ministry.62

About $1 mln (8 mln yuans)63

The Tajik defense ministry has previously received aid from China about $600 thou­sand in aid from China (5 mln yuans).

The Shipbuilding Depart­ment of the Russian Navy signs a contract with the “Severnaya Verf” Shipyard for the construction of the first project 20380 corvette.64

 

The corvette will be laid down in Decem­ber 2001.

The Kumertau Aircraft Production Enterprise (KumAPE) is reported to have delivered 2 Ka-31 (Helix) surveillance heli­copters to India.65

 

Apparently this is as per 1999 contract for delivery of 4 Ka-31 helicopters. KumAPE plans to export 9 helicopters by the end of 2001.
